Two-fifths of Basic Health Units Without Maternity Beds

ISLAMABAD, January 18: A Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) report on Wednesday said some maternity services were found lacking in Basic Health Units (BHUs) observed in December 2011. FAFEN Governance Monitors visited 133 BHUs in 87 districts nationwide- 65 in 34 districts in Punjab, 28 in 21 districts in KP, 24 in 16 districts in Sindh, 13 in as many districts in Balochistan and three in as many agencies in FATA.

Hike in prices of 27 commodities; 20 register decline

A report based on prices collected from 182 retail outlets in 92 districts across Pakistan. ISLAMABAD, JAN 3: A Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) report on Tuesday said prices of 27 commodities increased in December 2011 compared to the preceding month while those of 20 others fell and five remained unchanged.

High number of murder cases registered in three districts

ISLAMABAD, DEC 23: A Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) monitoring report on Friday said Karachi (West), Peshawar and Faisalabad districts registered high number of murder cases in September this year. FAFEN monitors visited 83 offices of District Police Officers (DPOs) throughout the country.

Boys’ secondary schools need more scientific apparatus, libraries and playgrounds

ISLAMABAD, DEC 19: Libraries, playgrounds and apparatus for laboratories were found lacking in some of the 109 boys' secondary schools monitored nationwide in November, according to a monitoring report of Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) on Monday. The report said nearly two-fifths of the monitored schools did not have libraries, adding that it is important to encourage students to read books other than those prescribed by the syllabus to broaden their horizons.

Dispensaries Lack Basic Medicines; Patients Complain of Overcharging

ISLAMABAD, Dec 14: A Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) report on Wednesday said basic medical equipment and free medicines were not available in 145 dispensaries visited nationwide in October this year. The report said items indispensable for protection from germs and transmission of communicable diseases like sterilizers and syringe cutters were not available, nor were free medicines prescribed by doctors.

Three polio cases confirmed in September

ISLAMABAD, December 7: Three cases of polio were confirmed in September this year – two in Killa Abdullah district in Balochistan and another in Punjab's Lodhran district, a Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) report on government healthcare facilities said on Wednesday.

Increase in Prices of 22 Commodities/Services

ISLAMABAD, December 1: A Free and Fair Election Network report said Thursday prices of 22 commodities/services had increased by 8 percent in November 2011 compared to the prices in the preceding month. The report said fruits, cooked items, vegetables, milk and medical services registered an increase in prices while those of some rice varieties, sweeteners, firewood, spices and condiments went down by 4 percent.
