ISLAMABAD, December 19, 2014: Starting 39 minutes behind schedule, the first sitting of the Senate’s 109th session lasted 13 minutes during which the House unanimously adopted a resolution to condemn the terrorist attack at a school in Peshawar on Tuesday, says Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) in its daily factsheet.
A PPPP senator tabled the resolution which termed the incident as a national tragedy and demanded stern action from the government against militant organizations. The House also offered prayers for the departed souls.
The sitting witnessed low attendance with 21 members (20%) present at the outset and 42 (40%) at the adjournment.
Following are some key observations of the House proceedings:
Members’ Participation in House Proceedings
- The Senate met for 13 minutes.
- The sitting started at 1639 hours against the scheduled time of 1600 hours, witnessing a delay of 39 minutes.
- The Chairman presided over the entire sitting.
- The Leader of the House attended the sitting while the Opposition Leader was absent.
- The Prime Minister did not attend the sitting.
- Twenty-one members (20%) were present at the start and 42 (40%) at the adjournment.
- The parliamentary leaders of ANP, PkMAP, NP, PPPP and PML-N attended the sitting.
- Two minority members were present.
- No member applied for leave
Output
- The House unanimously adopted a resolution tabled by a PPPP senator to condemn the terrorist attack in Peshawar that killed 141 people including 132 children and demanded stern action from the government against militant organizations.
Order and Institutionalization
- No point of order was raised.
- No protests/walkouts/boycotts were witnessed during the sitting.
