SC by-election suspension undermines ECP, Assemblies and fundamental rights

ISLAMABAD, January 20, 2012: The Supreme Court ruling on January 19, 2012 to suspend all upcoming by-elections violates the fundamental rights of at least four million citizens who will be without elected representation for an undefined period, according to the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN).

Last Sitting of 38th Session Marked by Low Attendance

ISLAMABAD, January 19, 2012: The National Assembly unanimously passed the National Commission for Women Bill 2011 during its last sitting of the 38th session. Two-fifths of Basic Health Units Without Maternity Beds

ISLAMABAD, January 18: A Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) report on Wednesday said some maternity services were found lacking in Basic Health Units (BHUs) observed in December 2011. FAFEN Governance Monitors visited 133 BHUs in 87 districts nationwide- 65 in 34 districts in Punjab, 28 in 21 districts in KP, 24 in 16 districts in Sindh, 13 in as many districts in Balochistan and three in as many agencies in FATA.

ISLAMABAD, January 18, 2012: The National Assembly during the fifth sitting of the ongoing session met for an hour and 56 minutes on Wednesday. A total of 92 Legislators were present at the start and 70 were present when the sitting was adjourned. Members raised a total of 21 Points of Order, which consumed 53% of the sitting time.

ISLAMABAD, January 17, 2012: The National Assembly met for an hour and one minute during the fourth sitting on Tuesday. The sitting, which started 19 minutes late, witnessed low attendance of Members. Only 61 Legislators were present at the start and 97 when the sitting was adjourned. The Agenda for the sitting was set ambitiously, as the House left most of the 45 items on the Orders of the Day unaddressed.
