FAFEN Violence Monitor: 595 People killed, 1054 injured and 51 kidnapped in political violence (March – May, 2011)

During the March-May 2011 quarter, a total of 216 incidents of political violence occurred across the country which affected 1,740 people of which 595 people were killed, 1,094 were injured and 51 were kidnapped. On average, seven people were killed, 12 were injured and one was reportedly kidnapped every day during this reporting period. In this quarter, 222 people died in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 160 in Sindh, 92 in Balochistan, 80 in Punjab, 40 in FATA and one in the ICT.

45% Girls Primary Schools Lack Clean Drinking Water Arrangements

Forty-five percent of the government girls' primary schools monitored by FAFEN in April 2011 lacked clean drinking water for students. This crucial arrangement was not available in 35 of the 78 monitored schools - eight in Punjab, 11 in Sindh, 12 in KP and in all the four schools monitored in Balochistan.

High Turnout, Suspicious Voting Patterns and Procedural Irregularities Mark GBLA-19 Ghizer-I By-Election

ISLAMABAD, April 28, 2011: A high turnout, suspicious voting patterns at 16 polling stations, inadequate and disparate arrangements for voters, procedural irregularities and the flawed method of identifying genuine voters marked the GBLA-19 Ghizer-I by-election, held on April 28, 2011, reports the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) in its Preliminary Report of the Ghizer-I By-Election Observation.

FAFEN Violence Monitor: 454 Deaths in political violence during three months

Due to frequent incidents of target killings in Karachi, Sindh experienced the highest number of incidents of political violence between December 2010 and February 2011. The region reported highest number of incidents in the previous quarter (September-November 2010) as well, however, a decrease of 43% was observed in the current reporting period. While Sindh experienced highest number of incidents of political violence, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remained the most violent as 169 out of a total 454 deaths were reported in the region. Of the total 240 incidents of political violence recorded by FAFEN between December 2010 and February 2011 from across Pakistan, 90 (37%) incidents were reported solely from Sindh. Balochistan reported 78 incidents followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (45), Federally Administered Tribal Areas (18), Gilgit-Baltistan (5), Punjab (3), and Islamabad Capital Territory (1).

10 Probable Poliomyelitis Cases Reported in Sindh

ISLAMABAD, April 13, 2011: Ten cases of probable poliomyelitis were reported in Health Offices in Sindh in January 2011 (five each in Umerkot and Jacobabad), according to FAFEN’s monthly Health Scan, a report analyzing the data of a selection of diseases gathered by FAFEN Monitors from Health Offices across Pakistan.
