THQs Lack Specialized Services in Dermatology, ENT and Pathology

ISLAMABAD, April 8, 2011: More than 90% of secondary care hospitals at Tehsil and Taluka level, monitored by FAFEN during February 2011 nationwide, do not have specialized healthcare services to cater to the needs of the patients with skin and ENT diseases.

No Library in Majority of Girls High Schools

ISLAMABAD, 4th April, 2011: One in every 10 sanctioned teaching posts in monitored government girls’ high schools is lying vacant nationwide, where one teacher has to teach, on an average, 33 girls. Among the monitored schools, 55% did not have a library and 43% had no playgrounds. The government needs to ensure the availability of staff and facilities for the education of female students in the country, says FAFEN Education Monitor released here Monday.

13th National Assembly of Pakistan: Annual Report 2010-2011

This annual report reviews the performance of 13th National Assembly in the third parliamentary year (March 2010 to March 2011). During this period, 10 regular sessions of the Lower House and two joint sessions of the Parliament were held. However, the report covers only the regular sessions. Marked by the passage of the historical 18th Amendment, the parliamentary year also witnessed improvement in terms of Members' participation in the proceedings, lawmaking, and utilization of session time. The Lower House held more sittings in the third parliamentary year than the second.

670 Murder FIRs Registered in 60 Districts During December 2010

ISLAMABAD, March 8, 2011: A total of 23,439 First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered with the police in 67 districts monitored by the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) during the month of December 2010. Of the total registered crimes, 1,422 cases (6%) pertained to murder and attempted murder, according to FAFEN’s monthly Pakistan Crime Monitor, the first report of which was released here Tuesday.

30 Suspected HIV cases Detected in December 2010

Thirty (30) cases of suspected Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and six cases of Probable Poliomyelitis were reported in four districts during December 2010, according to FAFEN’s monthly Health Scan, a report based on the compilation of data of the cases of a selection of diseases collected by the Offices of Executive District Officers (Health) across Pakistan.

Performance Report of women MPs: 3rd parliamentary year of 13th NA

Women Members accounted for almost half of the parliamentary agenda conducted during the third parliamentary year of the thirteenth National Assembly, according to parliamentary records and FAFEN’s direct observation of proceedings between March 11, 2010 and March 4, 2011. Women constitute less than one-quarter (23%) of the National Assembly’s current 340 members - 77 female parliamentarians, 60 elected on reserved seats and 17 elected through popular vote. Despite their significant underrepresentation, women Members actively participated in the parliamentary business and remained more assertive and effective as compared to many of their male counterparts in the National Assembly that is headed by the country’s first woman Speaker.
