Despite being only one-fifth of the current parliament, women sponsored more than one-third of the business, effectively raising citizens' voices and public interest issues, reveals a report released by the Trust for Democratic Education and Accountability- Free and Fair Election Network (TDEA-FAFEN) on the eve of International Women’s Day.

ISLAMABAD, August 16, 2018: Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) has released the Profile of 15th National Assembly (NA), which was sworn in on August 13, 2018. Currently, there are 330 members in the House. As many as nine seats have been vacated by the legislators who had won more than one seat in GE-2018. Moreover, two general seats are vacant due to postponement of the election while a woman-reserved seat of KP is also vacant. The incumbent Assembly has a representation of 12 political parties as compared to 18 parties represented in the previous Assembly. Additionally, there are four independent legislators in the House.

ISLAMABAD, June 30, 2018: The Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN), which is supported by the Trust for Democratic Education and Accountability (TDEA), released a report on the digitized details of the assets and liabilities of the former Members of the 14th National Assembly, on Saturday.
The declaration of the assets and liabilities was obligatory for all lawmakers at the time of nomination as well as annually after their election under Sections 12(2)(f) and 42-A of the Representation of the People Act, 1976 (which has now been replaced with the Elections Act, 2017). The statements, submitted by the end of September each year, contained details of the assets owned by the lawmakers, their spouses and their dependents. ISLAMABAD, Jun 27, 2018: The 14th National Assembly dedicated almost eight percent of its agenda to matters concerning foreign affairs, anti-terrorism and the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) during its five-year term that concluded on May 31, 2018. The House preferred the government-sponsored and supplementary business items over private lawmakers’ interventions over these issues, says a press release issued by the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) on Wednesday.
Pakistan witnessed crucial foreign relation challenges during last five years, including increasing tensions with neighbouring India and Afghanistan, various conflicts in the Muslim world, and strained ties with the United States (US) amidst warming relationship with Russia and the development of CPEC. Despite the urgency warranted by many of these issues, the government avoided proactive deliberation on foreign affairs in the National Assembly. ISLAMABAD, April 8, 2018: The average attendance per sitting of National Assembly (NA) legislators declined by 13% over the last five years. Analysis of attendance patterns suggests a link of the falling attendance rate with weak enforcement of parliamentary rules of procedure and general disinterest among political leaders to participate in parliamentary business. The annual average attendance per sitting declined from 222 (65%) legislators during the first year to 193 (56%) legislators during the fifth year. Similarly, session-wise attendance average fell from 311 (91%) per sitting during the first session in June 2013 to 192 (56%) in the last NA session that was prorogued sine die in March 2018.
According to the official records, each NA sitting was attended by an average of 60% legislators. Only five sittings were attended by 301 or more legislators, while 42 sittings were attended by 251 to 300 legislators. A total of 212 sittings had an attendance between 201 and 250 legislators, 174 had an attendance between 151 to 200 legislators, 33 had an attendance between 101 and 150 legislators while two sittings were attended by less than 100 legislators. The attendance also fluctuated on various weekdays. The average attendance on midweek days (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) is higher than the first and last working days of the week (Monday and Friday). Read More >>
